A 2026 review describes golf as requiring considerable walking, bending, squatting, static and dynamic postural control, and forceful swings. A player with strong legs might thrive while carrying a bag, while a player with joint pain might need a different approach entirely.

How to Evaluate the Traditional Carry

Carrying a bag places a very specific physical demand on your entire body. This option increases your workload, and it forces your core muscles to manage an asymmetrical load for hours. A British Journal of Sports Medicine review reported associations between golf and injuries involving the back, wrist, and elbow. Carrying heavy clubs can sometimes accelerate joint irritation if your foundational strength is lacking.

When I developed medial epicondylitis, commonly known as golfer's elbow, I thought I needed complete rest. Six weeks off the course did nothing to help. I finally learned that active recovery with a flexbar was the actual solution. It taught me that treating golf injuries requires loading the tissue properly, not just sitting on the couch and hoping for the best.

If you want to carry your bag safely, you must pass basic functional benchmarks. Single-leg balance is critical because you regularly stand on uneven surfaces. You can test this by standing near a sturdy support, lifting one foot, and maintaining control for up to 30 seconds. Focus entirely on keeping your planted foot completely still. Poor balance control has been associated with a higher risk of recurrent falls.

You also need significant leg strength to handle the physical cost of walking with a heavy load. You can screen your lower body capacity using the five-times chair-stand test. Find a stable chair of ordinary height, cross your arms over your chest, and stand up completely. Perform this movement five times without pushing off with your arms. This simple movement checks the functional leg strength required to climb steep hills on the course.

If you do decide to shoulder the load, your equipment setup matters immensely. In a small treadmill study of 15 men, a double-strap configuration produced significantly lower oxygen consumption, heart rate, and perceived exertion than a single-strap configuration. A double strap also improves your perceived comfort during the walk.

Why Pushing a Cart Offers a Different Challenge

Pushing a cart removes the heavy load from your spine. This option reduces upper body fatigue, and it keeps your shoulders feeling fresh for your swing. Pushing a cart up steep hills still places a heavy demand on your lower body. A golfer might walk easily on a flat sidewalk but struggle against the resistance of wet grass.

This modern method relies heavily on your ankle mobility and lower body control. Ankle dorsiflexion helps you negotiate slopes, and it keeps your center of mass perfectly balanced over your feet. You can check your capacity using a supported knee-to-wall test. Face a wall with your tested foot flat, keep your heel firmly planted, and drive your knee forward toward the wall. Gradually move your foot backward until your knee can no longer reach without your heel lifting.

You still need robust walking endurance to push a cart across miles of varied terrain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults aged 65 and older obtain at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Pushing a cart can easily meet this benchmark if your legs are prepared for the effort. Practice walking on gentle inclines before you attempt a demanding round.

The World Health Organization recommends that older adults perform varied multicomponent physical activity. This guidance emphasizes programs combining balance, strength, and functional movement to prevent falls. Adding these habits into your weekly routine prepares your body for the rigors of pushing equipment. A player with strong legs and mobile ankles will navigate the course with much less pain.

How to Decide What Keeps You Playing Longer

We constantly evaluate which option helps us play better for longer. The best choice depends on passing physical self-tests for every golfer. Research confirms that walking a course produces more steps and greater physiological demand than riding in a motorized cart. Carrying your bag is not inherently superior to pushing a cart, however. The safest equipment choice is the one that matches your current physical capacity.

If carrying causes shoulder pain, pushing a cart becomes the smarter strategy for your long-term health. The goal is to accumulate moderate activity without causing unnecessary wear on your joints. Use these simple movement screens to monitor your baseline at the start of each season. If you lose balance during a single-leg stand, focus on building stability before adding a heavy bag.

A targeted approach to fitness is better than stubbornly forcing yourself to carry a heavy load. Your physical reserves diminish over the course of a round, and fatigue directly impacts your swing mechanics. Adopting a holistic strategy for playing into your 80s means prioritizing joint health over tradition. Listen to your body, test your capacities, and adjust your equipment accordingly.

Making Your Final Call

The right strategy preserves your physical reserves for the critical back nine. You must focus on maintaining your balance, building lower-body force, and improving your walking endurance. Protect your health by choosing the method that allows for consistent pain-free play. Choose pushing a cart for chronic joint flare-ups, and choose carrying only if your functional leg strength comfortably supports the extra load.
