"Is this just normal stiffness, or am I actually injured?" It is the most common question we hear from golfers over 40. The saddest thing I have seen in golf is watching lifelong playing partners slowly drop out of our weekend group. It usually starts with a nagging shoulder or knee issue they ignore until it requires surgery.

That pattern is exactly why I became obsessed with golf longevity. We do not have to stop playing as we age, provided we do the right maintenance work between rounds. Telling the difference between ordinary fatigue and a real problem is a key part of that maintenance. Learning how to read your body accurately keeps you off the injured list.

Why am I stiff?

Most physical discomfort in golf comes from repetitive motion over many years. AAOS says that most golf injuries are overuse injuries caused by repeatedly placing stress on the same muscles, tendons, and joints through the golf swing. The lower back takes a massive amount of this repetitive stress during regular play. The lower back is a particularly important concern: AAOS says low-back injuries can account for up to 34% of golf injuries, citing research from the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences.

How often you play directly impacts your physical recovery and overall risk level. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) cites a March 2024 British Journal of Sports Medicine article estimating lifetime musculoskeletal-injury risk at 73.5% for professional golfers and 56.6% for amateur golfers. It also notes that some studies associate playing more than three or four rounds per week with greater injury risk among amateur golfers. Broad muscle fatigue that gradually improves is completely normal after a heavy week of golf.

Managing your practice volume is just as critical as monitoring your course time. Hitting hundreds of balls off tight mats can aggressively multiply your injury risk. Range mats hide fat shots while sending a harsh shockwave straight up your arms. Striking a reasonable balance between practice and recovery keeps your joints fresh.

Does it hurt distance?

Physical tightness directly changes your swing path and reduces your power. When your lower back tightens up, you naturally lose rotational flexibility on the course. You might start adapting your mechanics to avoid pain during the swing. This subconscious compensation often leads to poor contact and much shorter drives.

Losing the ability to turn freely creates a chain reaction of faults. When your hips stop rotating correctly, your arms take over the workload to generate speed. This forces your upper body to absorb shock that your legs should be handling. Eventually, your elbows and wrists pay the price for that missing mobility.

Ignoring this physical limit only creates more mechanical flaws over time. You naturally shorten your backswing to protect tight areas in your shoulders or hips. This forced adjustment often causes you to lose clubhead speed and sacrifice distance off the tee. Recognizing these limits early helps protect your longevity on the golf course.

What helps right now?

The safest immediate action on the course is to modify your play. Stop hitting maximum-speed swings right away if you feel unusual tightness. Switch to shorter clubs to reduce the load placed on your body. Focus entirely on turning your trail hip slowly to avoid sudden stress.

Reducing your range of motion can help you finish your round safely. You can punch shots down the fairway instead of demanding maximum extension. If a specific club consistently causes sharp pain, leave it in your bag for the rest of the day. Forcing a full swing through pain is the fastest way to sideline yourself.

If you are at the practice range, change your routine completely. AAOS recommends warming up before golf by performing simple stretches for the shoulders, back, and legs, then hitting practice shots beginning with wedges and gradually progressing toward longer clubs and full driver swings. A proper 10-minute pre-round warm-up prepares your joints safely. Gentle movement that does not increase symptoms is often better than forcing complete inactivity.

When to see doctors

Some symptoms require immediate professional evaluation rather than extra rest. Mass General Brigham advises prompt evaluation when pain is accompanied by tingling, numbness, weakness, or swelling. Mass General Brigham also identifies numbness, burning, or tingling radiating into the hands or legs as symptoms that warrant medical attention. These are clear signs of a loss of function rather than simple stiffness.

Time is another highly useful measuring tool for evaluating workout pain. Pain that limits normal activity for more than three days is a reasonable threshold for considering professional evaluation, according to Mass General Brigham’s workout-pain guidance. For hand and arm problems, Mass General Brigham advises evaluation when pain lasts more than a few days, interferes with work or sleep, or follows an injury or accident. You should seek urgent care sooner if you experience a sudden pop or an inability to bear weight.

How to prevent this

Building strength and flexibility off the course helps protect your body from future strain. Trunk and abdominal conditioning through activities like yoga or Pilates can build physical resilience. Incorporating a 15-minute mobility routine into your week makes a massive difference. Supporting your body between rounds is the best way to prevent overuse injuries from ruining your season.

Building a robust upper body is equally valuable for long-term health. AAOS lists rowing and pulldown exercises using resistance tubing to help support the back. A stronger back provides a better anchor point for your golf swing. This added stability keeps your spine protected when you swing aggressively.

Medication choices also require careful planning and professional guidance. AAOS cautions that golfers with arthritis aggravated by play should discuss whether medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen are appropriate with a doctor. Masking pain with medication without fixing the root cause is a bad strategy for older players. Steady maintenance work is the only reliable way to keep playing without constant discomfort.

Check your body next

The next time you visit the practice tee, take a moment to evaluate how you feel before grabbing a club. Listen to your body before you make your first aggressive swing. Pay attention to how your joints respond as you slowly increase your club speed with wedges. If you notice sharp pain or a loss of rotation, pack up your clubs and focus on recovery instead.
