Your body must handle long-duration endurance alongside the explosive rotation of a driver swing.

A Three-Stage Return to the Course

The most effective way to rebuild tolerance is a phased approach. You should begin your return by rebuilding basic movement capacity with two short strength sessions each week. Start with pain-free walking, simple squats and trunk-control tasks before picking up a club.

When you finally head to the practice facility, leave your driver in the trunk. Focus entirely on your putting and chipping mechanics first. This builds time on your feet without applying high-velocity stress to your spine. As you feel stronger, add partial swings with your wedges.

You can then slowly introduce short irons before finally moving to your longer clubs. If you experience discomfort during this ramp-up phase, you must adjust your training immediately. Rethinking Your Range Sessions

Many returning players head straight to the driving range and blast through a large bucket of balls. This approach concentrates an enormous volume of swings into a very short period. One golf-practice guide advises starting with smaller range volumes rather than jumping immediately to 100 balls. Taking this advice seriously will save your lower back from unnecessary early-season trauma.

A safe progression might involve hitting 20 balls in your first session, followed by 30 in the next. You might repeat 30 balls again before finally moving up to 40 practice swings. The exact number matters less than your strict commitment to gradual progression. You want to finish your practice feeling fresh instead of waiting for joint pain to dictate when you stop.

If you struggle to hit even these small benchmarks safely, you might have underlying mobility restrictions. You should also evaluate your ankle function, balance, general strength and physical endurance. Taking time for preparing your body before the first tee will improve these specific movement patterns.

Numbers do not lie: gradually scaling your workload is the best strategy for staying on the course. While an injury rate of 2.5 per 1,000 rounds sounds safe, that average hides the real danger of workload spikes. Your body needs a sensible ramp-up period to handle the unique demands of walking and swinging.
