Many players over 40 assume their shrinking drives are purely a flexibility problem. They force extreme rotational stretches that load their joints into risky positions. The research challenges this approach directly. Published golf-specific exercise literature explicitly notes that research has not established whether stretching reduces golf-injury risk. The relationship between passive range of motion and on-course performance remains uncertain.
Golf performance and injury prevention are not the same outcome. An exercise might improve your clubhead speed or confidence without proving that it prevents an injury. In fact, combining high force with extreme trunk and shoulder range of motion increases your risk for a low-back injury. A more balanced training model is necessary for an aging body. Stand in a golf posture while holding a very light resistance band anchored beside you. Allow a small rotation toward the anchor, then return to the center and stop completely. If your pelvis continues to spin after your torso stops, you lack rotational control. You must address this before seeking more thoracic spine mobility. Speed without braking capacity is a major liability.
A smart longevity strategy requires honesty about where your body is today. If your balance test was unsteady, start with supported single-leg holds and basic hip control exercises. Once you have a strength foundation, you can safely audit your hip and spine mobility. Building a resilient body takes time, patience, and a willingness to do the quiet work.
