Why Do Lower Back Injuries Sideline So Many Experienced Players?

When tour professionals suddenly withdraw from weekend tournaments because of lower back pain, spectators often blame a single violent swing. The true cause is rarely that simple. The reality is usually a failure to manage repetitive load over thousands of practice balls. We see the exact same pattern at the amateur level.

How Does Repetitive Swing Force Impact The Body?

A conventional golf fitness routine heavily prioritizes producing force. Players want to turn more quickly, generate higher clubhead speed and create physical separation between their upper and lower body. The missing complementary quality is force absorption. This is the ability of the hips, knees, ankles and trunk to slow movement and stabilize the body.

In a golf swing, force transfers through the legs, pelvis, arms and club. Your body needs to act as a reliable braking system. If your muscles cannot absorb the high force of your swing, that stress goes directly into your joints and connective tissue. The problems start when repeated high-force movement, insufficient physical preparation and poorly managed workloads combine.

A scoping review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that golf has an overall moderate injury incidence. Back injuries are the most frequent issue reported by players. The review identified repetitive practice volume as the most frequent reported cause of injury among amateur and professional golfers. Suboptimal swing biomechanics also frequently contribute to these physical problems.

Published amateur injury estimates vary widely, showing an annual injury incidence of 15.8% to 40.9%. The review also noted lifetime incidence estimates of 25.2% to 67.4%. Prospective studies cited in the same review found comparatively low injury rates per playing hour among amateurs. These studies reported approximately 0.28 to 0.60 injuries per 1,000 hours.

Why Are Golfers Over 40 Particularly Vulnerable?

Golf has a massive and aging participation base. In 2025, the National Golf Foundation reported 48.1 million U.S. golf participants aged six and older. This group included 29.1 million on course golfers and 19 million participants who played exclusively in off course settings. The National Golf Foundation also reported that 6.3 million Americans aged 65 and older played golf in 2025.

Internationally, the game is also growing rapidly across all demographics. The R&A recorded 112.2 million adults and juniors playing golf across affiliated markets outside the United States and Mexico in 2025. That represents an impressive increase of 4.2 million players from the previous year. The same report counted 65 million adult golfers and 47.1 million junior golfers in those exact markets.

These participation figures point to a broader narrative about healthy aging and physical longevity. Golfers are not merely trying to hit the ball farther off the tee. Many players are trying to remain capable of walking, rotating, balancing and recovering across a long playing life. Framing deceleration as part of maintaining movement quality is vital for these experienced recreational players.

Many mature players focus entirely on passive stretching to maintain their golf swing. Mobility is not interchangeable with movement control. A golfer might possess adequate range of motion but completely lack the strength to control that range under physical load. Golfers over 40 face a high risk of back injuries because they often lose their braking strength as they age.

Eccentric strength is the muscle's ability to lengthen under tension. It is the exact type of physical strength required to brake the golf swing safely. Without it, players cannot easily manage the physical stress of repetitive swings on the practice tee. Are Traditional Stretches Failing Your Swing?

The instinct to loosen up before a round is entirely correct. The physical execution of that warm up is often deeply flawed. Many mature golfers rely heavily on static stretching to prepare their bodies for a high speed rotational movement. This approach completely ignores the urgent need for force absorption and dynamic stability.

We have seen this common trap first hand on the golf course. "I used to stand on the first tee doing long, static hamstring stretches because I thought it was the right way to warm up. I would actually feel weaker on my first drive. Research later showed me that dynamic movements, like leg swings and torso twists, prime the nervous system much better. Restricting your rotation is not necessarily protective for your back. Uncontrolled flexibility is equally harmful to your joints and connective tissues. Your joints need muscular stability just as much as they need freedom of movement. Players returning from a long layoff should seek assessment from a qualified rehabilitation professional before starting new routines. You should immediately stop an exercise if it produces sharp pain, worsening joint discomfort or a loss of physical control.

What Adjustments Can Build Better Force Absorption?

Deceleration should be trained progressively over a period of several weeks. It is never an automatic byproduct of becoming stronger or more flexible. You must build your muscular capacity to accept and organize force before you can reliably redirect it. The ultimate goal is to build highly usable and easily controlled mobility.

Start With Supported Step Downs

A useful entry point for eccentric strength is a basic supported step down. Stand on a low step while holding a rail or golf club for physical balance. Slowly lower the opposite heel toward the floor over three to four seconds. Focus entirely on keeping the working knee tracking in perfect line with the foot.

You should perform this exercise at a height that allows complete, pain free control. The most important variable is the lowering phase, not the height of the step itself. Keep your pelvis as level as possible throughout the entire physical movement. Return to the top position under complete muscular control.

Develop Split Stance Strength

A split stance squat introduces safe unilateral loading. It keeps your feet in a highly relevant staggered position for the golf swing. Begin with just your body weight and use a very shallow range of motion. Lower your body smoothly over a period of two to four seconds.

You can hold a support if your balance feels limited at first. Pause near the bottom of the movement and return without bouncing. The purpose is to build physical control in the lead and trail legs. You should not use this movement to chase extreme muscular fatigue.

Train Rotation With A Brake

For a controlled rotational drill, you can use a light resistance band. Begin in a comfortable split stance and rotate gradually toward your trail side. Pause briefly at the very end of the rotational motion. Return to the starting position without allowing the band to snap your torso back.

The deliberate return and stabilization phase acts as the physical brake. The movement should remain smooth and controlled at all times. The physical load should be light enough that you can easily control the final portion of the rotation. This simple drill reinforces proper biomechanics without risking sudden injury.

Manage Your Practice Load

Repetitive practice volume is a major known contributor to amateur golf injuries. You should vary your practice intensity to protect your joints and muscles. Avoid treating every single range session as a maximum speed physical effort. Learning to adopt compact swing mechanics can also help manage the heavy physical toll of practice.

A practical week might include one highly technical range session. You could follow this with one strength session focusing on controlled unilateral and rotational work. The final practice day could be an easier mobility session or a relaxed walking round. Managing your volume is just as important as perfecting your physical technique.
