You have heard a million times that stretching is the only way to stay flexible for golf, but the truth according to Golf Digest is completely different.

Their clinicians check core function, functional movement patterns, and upper-body strength. They also assess thoracic mobility, hip mobility, and shoulder mobility. Building strength gives your nervous system the confidence to let those joints move freely.
When you lack foundational strength, your body finds other ways to create power. This often leads to harmful secondary compensations during the swing. If your lower body cannot generate enough force, your arms and lower back take over. This extra strain is exactly how restricted joint movement drives pain across your entire body.
When your hips lack strength, your body forces your lower back to rotate further than it should. The lumbar spine is designed for stability, not extreme rotation. Forcing it to twist aggressively leads to serious pain after a round. This is why building foundational leg strength is highly critical for older players.
A few years ago, I noticed my swing falling apart around the 14th hole. My lower back would tighten up, and I started compensating with my arms. I spent months thinking it was a swing flaw. Boyle recommends organizing a golfer’s gym program around pushing, pulling, lower-body strength, and core work. You do not need to become a bodybuilder to see the benefits. His suggested structure is deliberately simple. It focuses on four basic movement patterns.
You should build your gym sessions around one pushing exercise, one pulling exercise, one lower-body exercise, and one core exercise. For a pushing movement, try a simple dumbbell press or an elevated push-up. For pulling, a cable row or supported dumbbell row works perfectly. Add a split squat or step-up for your lower body.
Finish the routine with a side plank for core stability. Always perform strength exercises through a comfortable, controlled range rather than forcing end positions. Focus entirely on moving smoothly and maintaining your balance. The goal is building the stability needed for better control and lasting performance.
You should start with light weights to master the movement pattern before adding resistance. Progressive overload is the key to seeing real results over time. You simply add a small amount of weight or do one extra repetition as you get stronger. This gradual progression keeps your joints safe while building tremendous physical capability.
If you have specific movement restrictions, you can still stretch those tight areas. A personalized approach works best. We recommend that older golfers should perform regular self-checks to identify specific limitations. You can then apply a consistent mobility routine exactly where you need it most.
Fit for Golf reports that participants averaging 47 years old improved clubhead speed by 5.1 mph after its eight-week program. Their speed increased from 94.9 to 100.0 mph with band, stretching, and balance work performed three to four times weekly. These same golfers increased their carry distance by 17.6 yards, jumping from 211.8 to 229.4 yards. Training your muscles is about active joint control and long-term durability.
