Understanding the distinct roles of stretching, mobility and strength training helps clarify how to spend your limited preparation time safely.
Many players confuse simple flexibility with complete physical conditioning. A major scoping review identified 301 studies on golf and health and concluded that golf is commonly associated with positive physical-health and mental-wellness outcomes, while stressing that the evidence does not establish causation. While the game provides excellent moderate-intensity activity, simply playing a round does not build the requisite strength to prevent injuries. To properly prepare your body for the physical demands of golf, you must differentiate between improving joint range, rehearsing movement and building muscular force.
Walking 18 holes typically involves 11,245 to 16,667 steps and covers approximately 4 to 8 miles. This substantial workload varies substantially according to course terrain, player fitness and whether you walk or ride. The review found estimated golf energy expenditure ranging from 264 to 450 calories per hour, which equals 531 to 2,467 calories per 18 holes. During a standard round, your body relies on muscular endurance to carry you up hills and stabilize your posture.
When you address the ball on the front nine, you need sufficient joint mobility to complete a full backswing. Addressing your physical limitations requires a structured approach that respects your available time and recovery capacity. The American College of Sports Medicine's 2026 resistance-training position stand synthesized 137 systematic reviews involving more than 30,000 participants and highlighted consistency as more important than complicated programming.
First, reserve static stretching for recovery days or after your round. If you feel stiff before play, utilize an efficient pre-round warm-up lasting 5 to 10 minutes instead. Dynamic stretching produced only a small flexibility effect of approximately 0.77% compared with control in the reviewed evidence, but it yielded a small positive performance effect of approximately 0.55%. Focus entirely on easy walking, controlled bodyweight lunges and progressive practice swings.
Second, commit to a basic weekly resistance routine to build resilience. If you have moderate recovery capacity, schedule two short strength sessions per week. Incorporate a manageable squat pattern, a hip hinge and a pulling exercise. If you are trying to implement a major technical change, put your skill practice after a general warm-up but before any heavy conditioning. Keep the number of full swings limited and use frequent breaks. Pain should never be confused with ordinary stiffness, so any radiating pain or loss of strength requires assessment by a qualified clinician.
The staggering injury rates among amateur players do not have to dictate your future on the course. By clearly understanding what your body actually needs, you can stop forcing ineffective stretches and start building true resilience. Balancing mobility for movement, strength for durability and skill practice for efficiency is the physical foundation of playing better for longer.
