Professionals condition their bodies daily to handle extreme rotational loads. Amateurs often sit at a desk all week, rush to the first tee, and attempt aggressive swings. This load mismatch places immense strain on joints that have lost their baseline flexibility. True power requires building clubhead speed after 40 safely through a dedicated physical routine.

Over time, the human body naturally loses rotational capacity in the thoracic spine and hips. When the hips stop turning freely, the lower back tries to generate the missing range of motion. The lumbar spine is built for stability, not for extreme twisting under heavy load. A sustainable routine for older players is the only way to avoid this painful cycle.

Consistency Beats Intensity

Building the Foundation

The solution to preserving distance is building strength and movement capacity. Summaries of WHO guidance recommend 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity weekly. This routine should include muscle-strengthening work on at least two days. General older-adult exercise guidance consistently emphasizes combining this aerobic activity with functional balance work.

Before chasing speed, you must assess whether you can rotate through your hips and spine while maintaining posture. If you cannot control your current range of motion, adding more speed will only cause problems. Older players must respect their current limitations and build from the ground up.

Strength and Resistance Training

A golf-performance guide summarizing a 2021 systematic review of 20 studies states that resistance training improved clubhead speed and hitting distance. Combined golf-specific and general programs of approximately eight weeks were described as especially effective. The same guide recommends emphasizing lower-body power alongside rotational strength work. Golfers should incorporate movements like the squat, deadlift, or trap-bar patterns to build force production.

Once leg strength improves, players can add rotational work such as cable rotations or medicine-ball throws. When we respect our physical limits and train strategically, the game opens up entirely. As the years accumulate, the truest measure of power is the ability to swing pain-free tomorrow.
